Company: Darkgrade
Location: Remote / Denver, CO
Darkgrade is an early-stage startup building software for creative professionals to automate hardware workflows including cameras, lighting, sound, editing, and visual effects.
Our first product is open-source and allows developers to programmatically control their camera – capture photos, adjust settings, stream live view, record video, and manage files – all with a simple, type-safe API that runs anywhere. We handle everything to integrate with disparate vendors and provide a friendly toolset without the complexity of low-level protocols.
You would be the second hire and a true founding engineer reporting directly to the CEO: high ownership, direct influence on architecture and roadmap, and a seat at the table as the team and product grow.
You will help build and maintain Darkgrade’s core product offerings — not as a narrow specialist on one layer, but as someone who can own the entire stack from binary code/hardware drivers to developer experience to our marketing website.
Most of our current hard problems are low-level: USB/Wi-Fi transport, vendor-specific camera behavior, binary codecs/drivers, and hardware validation against real Sony, Nikon, and Canon mirrorless bodies.
In the next 6 months, there will be ample opportunities to forge a path forward on several other core products with a heavy focus on LLM-powered workflows. Aspirationally, in a year – we’d like two people with no creative experience to be able to sit down say a few instructions with their voice, and get back a completely edited video ready for publishing to YouTube/Spotify with less than 5 minutes of post-production work.
